After a year and a half of discussions, the Article 29 Data Protection Working Party has approved the commitments made by Microsoft to guarantee the security of data stored in its clouds. In practice, the green light will allow international transfers of data from the European Union to the rest of the world, with or without a 'safe harbour', by reducing the number of authorisations required.

Background
The Article 29 Working Party is made up of representatives of national authorities charged with personal data protection, the European Data Protection Supervisor and the European Commission. It is tasked with ensuring implementation of Directive 95/46/EC on the protection of personal data.
