Background
From 2007 to 2013, the EU invested €157 million in 27 projects involving embryonic stem cells. Another €42 million was paid in grants from the European Research Council and in Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions for similar projects. Eighteen member states authorise research involving embryonic stem cells, while three – Poland, Lithuania and Slovakia – expressly prohibit it.
