Renewable energy : Battle rages on in Poland

The new law on the development of renewable energy may be amended – which could harm small producers

After five years of preparation, there is already an amendment proposed to Poland's new law on renewable energy, which has only just been adopted - and which continues to make waves in the member state. The text was approved by the president in March, and should enter into force on 1 January 2016 – but the government already has plans to amend it. Polish law on renewable energy

The text provides for the transition from the current system of green certificates (whereby the EU provides bonuses for producing green electricity) to an auction system. The government will decide the amount of green energy the country requires (in order to reach the goal of 15% renewable energies by 2020) and on this basis will organise auctions to benefit the cheapest projects. These will be supported for 15 years, funded by taxes on consumers. For the government, the goal is to "free up massive investment in renewable energies" and fulfil its commitments to EU climate policy "in the most profitable way possible".
