Legislative amendments from a number of Nordic MEPs in the European Parliament risk threatening the legality of the European Union’s landmark ban on the trade of seal products, Humane Society International (HSI) has said.

If successful, the proposals could bring the EU in contravention with World Trade Organisation rules, the group warns. Others, however, disagree.

The EU introduced the ban in 2009 following public outrage against the practice of killing seals. Canada and Norway challenged the decision at the WTO.…
