Biogas booms in France but stays local

The producers of gas from organic matter want to contribute to Europe’s renewable energy targets and energy supply security

All 73,000 tonnes of household waste produced each year in the Eastern part of the Département of Saône-et-Loire are currently buried underground. The local associations have decided to transform it into energy. Their umbrella organisation, SMET71, wants to build a biomethane facility in Chagny in the Département of Saône-et-Loire (Burgundy, East-Central France). The biomethane will be injected into the gas grid and supply energy as of 2015.
