The European Commission tabled, on 22 April, a proposal that would allow the member states to evoke safeguards "not based on science but on other considerations" to ban the use on their territory of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in feed and food products. The five-page draft amending regulation, including two articles only, does not, however, define on what specific grounds could such a ban be imposed, leaving governments, farmers and importers in the dark.
