Beijing will roll out the red carpet for Martin Schulz. The president of the European Parliament will receive the treatment of a head of state during his first visit to China since his election. Schulz is expected to meet President Xi Jinping as well as other political heavyweights from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), a source told Europolitics . If confirmed, their meeting would be significant, as Xi is emerging as the strongest Chinese leader since Deng Xiaoping, strengthening rapidly…

Mogherini denounces crackdown

The EU is raising its voice against the arrest of five Chinese women activists, who were planning to launch an awareness campaign against sexual harassment. "The arrest and detention of women’s rights activists in China on the grounds that they wanted to launch a campaign against sexual harassment on International Women's Day violates their right to demonstrate peacefully," said a spokesperson for High Representative Federica Mogherini, on 12 March. "We expect the Chinese authorities to release them without delay and to allow them immediate access to legal assistance and to their families."
