“There is no anti-TTIP caucus,” says pro-trade US congressman

A leading advocate for the EU-US free trade deal claims there is no organised opposition to it from his colleagues on Capitol Hill

Minnesota Republican Erik Paulsen, who last year co-founded a caucus – an issue-specific informal group in the US Congress - to advance the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), thought that Democrats with ties to trade unions were the closest thing to an anti-TTIP camp. Sharing a platform with two fellow TTIP caucus members at an event hosted by the German Marshall Fund on 21 January in Washington, Paulsen said the caucus was sending out weekly notices to their colleagues…

Why is TPA necessary?

President Obama can still conclude the TTIP without having TPA. The problem is that Congress could then vote on it article by article, which is obviously an unacceptable scenario for the EU. TPA also gives Congress a chance to tell Obama precisely what it wants in the agreement, something it has not done yet as the US president, unlike the European Commission, launched negotiations without needing a mandate to do so.
