Just like his predecessor, the new president of Eurelectric, the main lobbying organisation of Europe's electricity industry, will be a reformer with a progressive agenda. Speaking in Berlin at a conference back in 2014, António Mexia, CEO of Portugal's largest utility EDP, left a lasting impression when he delivered a wake-up call to the participants from the electricity industry, describing how investments in the sector were drying up and how desperate the need was for a radical change.

Five priorities
Mexia has identified five priorities for the lobby organisation' next two years during his inaugural press conference. He said that industry had to make clear that a stable framework for decarbonisation would be the main driver of Europe's energy system. Secondly, decarbonisation should be achieved in the most efficient way. The third priority would be to promote a coherent market design and achieving an internal energy market with harmonised regulations. Fourth, Mexia said that Eurelectric would focus on providing solutions that cater for the changing needs of the empowered energy consumers. Fifth, the role of distribution network operators (DSOs) should be highlighted, because they are technology enablers and market facilitators.
