It is the end of a long-running saga. Jean-Claude Juncker approved, on 13 May, Research Commissioner Carlos Moedas’ recommendation to set up a new mechanism for independent scientific advice to the Commission. The new system (see chart) focuses on bringing together supply and demand of scientific advice through a “structured relationship” with the national academies of science and other scientific bodies, which will be coordinated by a new high-level group, composed of up to seven eminent scientists.
